Public Transportation and qCodes
qCodes make it easy for public transportation systems to provide users with a way to find the exact location of a particular stop, or find the closest stop to their location.
The General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) provides the locations of individual stops for thousands public transportation systems. With this data already available it is a simple task to allocate qCodes to each individual stop. For a list of the more than 800 public transportation systems worldwide that provide this information, click here or here.
Below is an example for San Francisco. Each of the different systems can have a unique qCode form. They can also have a single series of qCodes that show all public transportation stops.
If user enters only "BRT" they will be shown a list of the closest BART stops to their current location. If user enters "PTR" they will be shown all public transportation stations near them, ranked by distance from their location.
For the sake of clarity, not all stops are shown on the map.
